Raise your hand, how many of you can start a fire from scratch? Using a lighter or matches is cheating! How about find a safe source of drinking water that doesn't come from the tap or a bottle? Can you build a simple shelter to keep you warm and dry? What about food, do you know how to prepare it once the power goes out and all of your modern conveniences cease to work?
Chances are good that you answered no to every single one of those questions, because in today's modern society we no longer place a high value on these types of skills. They're seen as out-dated and old fashioned, so we no longer teach them to our children, or perhaps we can't teach them to our children because they were never taught to us in the first place.
So where does that leave you in the face of a natural disaster, or even worse the Zombie Apocalypse? If you won't be able to fall back on the modern technology you have come to rely on, will you be able to stay calm enough to keep yourself, not just alive, but living well in the days to come?
Just some food for thought...
A few years ago I stumbled across an interesting survival book by Lauren Wilson: The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse, an illustrated cookbook and culinary survival guide. I loved how it approached the art of survival with a sensor of humor, something that is always in short supply when disaster strikes and tensions are high. This month Lauren is at it again with her latest release: The Walking Dead: the Official Cookbook and Survival Guide. It's written with the same quick wit as her last book, while putting basic survival skills in perspective for the under-prepared. It's a great resource for Walking Dead fans who have been meaning to put together a 72 hour kit, or bug-out-bag, but haven't quite gotten around to it yet. With this book you'll have a basic set of useful survival skills at your fingertips, plus you'll be able to finally try out some of the recipes that have popped up on the show over the years.
