Did you know that Birthday Cake m&m's were a thing? I didn't until Wednesday night when I was wandering through HyVee (our new grocery store) and made the mistake of traveling down the candy isle at 11pm while hungry. You would think at the ripe old age of 31 I would know better, but apparently not, which is why I left the store with a lot more than the two loaves of bread that I had intended on purchasing. This purchase was at least somewhat justified since my birthday was on Sunday. I can't think of a better reason to splurge on Birthday Cake m&m's, can you?
Happy belated 31st birthday to me! I was so busy with my brother's wedding and Mother's day last weekend that I barely had the chance to celebrate.
Honestly, I think I'm a bit of a sucker when it comes to m&m's. They've always been one of my favorite candies and the introduction of flavors like Peanut Butter, Mint, and Cherry Cordial have turned me from a Peanut m&m's purist to somewhat of a specialty flavor addict. There have been quite a few new flavors that I have really enjoyed. Pretzel m&m's are quickly becoming my second favorite, although there have been a number flavors that left a lot to be desired. Pumpkin Spice and Candy Corn were absolute disgusting and I ended up throwing the bags away after just a few pieces because no one would agree to take them off my hands. However, despite the oftentimes disappointing flavors I still insist on trying each of them out (although Carrot Cake did manage to escape my notice until it was too late and I'm still pretty bummed about that.)
So how is the flavor? Well, these certainly aren't going to replace my current #1 (peanut butter), but they aren't bad. They also aren't what I was expecting either. When I think of birthday cake white cake with sprinkles (funfetti) tends to come to mind which is why I expected these to be white chocolate. They surprised me by being made of milk chocolate and tasted more like chocolate cake with white icing. Not a bad flavor, but they could have been so much more. On the plus side, they do have a distinct chocolate cake flavor to them. The only problem is that after eating more than a couple of pieces the cake flavor disappears and they begin to taste like plain m&m's. Not that there is anything wrong with plain m&m's, I just expected a little bit more.
Would I purchase these again? Probably not. They were fun to try and I'd eat them again if someone handed me a bag, but I wouldn't go out of my way to seek these out.
