We've reviewed a number of teas from Adagio during Tuesday Tea, but it's been awhile since I've placed an order with them (my last order was just after my ingenuiTEA had an unfortunate accident at the hands of a toddler.) When they reached out to me several weeks ago I jumped at the chance to select several samples to share with you, including today's tea, Rwanda Rukeri.
I'll readily admit that I don't drink black tea often, I prefer oolong and green the majority of the time, but Rwanda Rukeri really caught my eye. I've had the opportunity to review teas from Africa in the past (including several from Kenya) but I was unaware that Rwanda produced tea. Since it's such a unique tea I decided that it had to be the first of the samples I shared with you.
The description of this tea says it's similar in to Assam and Kenyan teas and I happen to agree. The tea was mildly astringent, slightly sweet, and reminded me of fresh baked bread drizzled with honey. It's a very strong bodied tea, one that is well suited to breakfast— it's strong enough to force even my eyes open (and we all know I'm not a morning person.)
If you aren't a fan of astringency, or bitterness, in tea, then consider cold steeping this in the fridge over night. It makes an excellent iced tea and the cold steeping process draws out less of the astringency and more of the sweetness.
Would I order this again? Yes. I really enjoyed my first tea from Rwanda, hopefully we see more unique offerings like this in the future.
