For the past few years I've been hearing about Sweetie Pie's from some of my friends who still live in the St. Louis Metro area. They've been serving up soul food for several years and are very quickly becoming known as a St. Louis institution. I haven't had a chance to pop in for a visit yet, but I did notice one of the local grocery stores, Schnucks, is carrying their famous sweet tea. I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity to finally try it, so I picked up a bottle of each flavor— original, berry berry, and peach passion.
This isn’t your mama’s sweet tea, that’s apparent from the first sip. Once I got past the holy s*&t! that’s sweet phase and was able to start appreciating the flavors I decided that this tea has depth. It’s much more than black tea with a ton of simple syrup tossed in all willey-nilley. It tastes like someone dropped a vanilla bean in it and spashed a bit of citrus on top, making it taste an awful lot like a creamsicle. It took me awhile to decide if that was a good or bad thing. I expect my sweet tea to taste a particular way, but Sweetie Pie’s blew my ideas of what a sweet tea should taste like clear out of the water. I’m not sure if it’s enough to push my beloved Red Diamond out of it’s spot as the king of all sweet teas, but it’s pretty darn close.
As for the flavored varieties I picked up, I wasn't a fan of the Berry Berry. It had an off taste that didn't sit well with me. The Peach Passion on the other hand, now that was delicious. It's very similar to what I make at home, although it has a lot more sugar. Of the three, Peach Passion was my favorite, only slightly edging out the original flavor.
My Rating: 85/100
Would I order this again? Absolutely! I've never tasted a bottled tea quite like this one.
