Not long ago Arbor Teas asked me if I'd like several samples of their tea to review. Of course I said yes. I had just finished up reviewing their Organic Assam Tonganagoan Estate Black Tea and was excited to try out some of their more unusual teas (you may have seen my previous review of their Organic Hawaii Sweet Roast Green Tea.) I spent quite a bit of time deliberating over my choices. I'll admit, I almost passed up the ginger chili tisane in favor of another hawaiian grown tea, but I couldn't resist the temptation. I love all things spicy and this blend sounded promising.
I want to say up front that Arbor teas was not kidding when they said this tea packed a punch. I had taken my first sip and was starting to notice how well the heavy citrus flavor and spicy cloves played off each other when the chili pepper came out of no where and hit me upside the head. My first thought after my head cleared was wow, this really works.
I've tried several other chili pepper teas and have found the flavor to be rather one dimensional. The spice from the peppers tends to downed out all other flavors, which is why I think that the combination of ginger root, cloves and chili pepper is brilliant. All three ingredients add their own brand of spicy to the mix, giving the tisane a lot more depth than chili pepper alone would have. The addition of lemon peel cuts right through all of the spice, lending a tart, citrus flavor the the blend. Adding a spoon full of honey, as suggested, rounds out the flavors a little more leaving you with a drink that is sweet, tart, and spicy all at once. I was looking for a unique blend from Arbor Teas and clearly found it in the ginger chili tisane. I don't think I've come across another blend quite like this, they definitely know how to think out side of the box with their flavor combinations.
My Rating: 92/100
Would I order this again? Yes. This is perfect for those times when a cold or seasonal allergies have stuffed up my head.
In an effort to be open with my readers I want to let you know that Arbor Teas has provided me with tea for review. As always, all opinions are my own.
