Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream Desserts is the second book to come out by Jeni Britton Bauer, owner of Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams. The Ohio-based ice cream shop has developed quite the cult following over the last few years and with Jeni's inventiveness and dedication to quality ingredients it should come as no surprise so many people are fans. Her original book Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream Desserts has been on my wish list for years and one of these days I'd still love to pick up a copy (although my husband has currently banned me from buying any more books.) Despite my large cookbook collection I only own one dedicated to the art of ice cream, something I've been meaning to remedy for awhile now, which is why I'm so exited to have a copy of this book to play with.
Cookbooks about ice cream always tend to catch my eye because I love making my own ice cream from scratch. It's far superior to the store bought stuff, plus it allows me to control not only the quality of ingredients that go into it, but also the flavors that I make. I don't have to stick with boring chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry. I can make anything that comes to mind, including the butter brickle ice cream that I can't seem to find where I'm currently living. This flavor is so illusive that for the longest time my husband didn't believe it really existed. I promise you that it does and it is amazing.
When it comes to ice cream I'm always looking for flavor inspiration and this book has no shortage of new ideas. It's broken down into three main sections Ice Cream Parlor, Bakeshop, and Sundae Bar. Ice Cream Parlor is full of unique ice cream, custard, yogurt, and sorbet flavor combinations such asDark Chocolate & Rye Whiskey Ice Cream, Middle West Eggnog Frozen Custard, Fresh Peach Frozen Yogurt, and Red Raspberry Sorbet. Some of the flavors sound pretty far out there, but those that I have sampled so far have turned out to be absolutely delicious.
Bakeshop, the second chapter of the book, is perfect for the times when you're looking for something else to accompany your ice cream. In this chapter you'll find various recipes for cakes, pies, tarts and other yummy treats that can only be improved upon with a heaping scoop of ice cream. Last, but not least we have Sundae Bar. I think this is my favorite chapter because the treats are perfect for sharing with a special someone. If you've never shared a late night conversation over a tall ice cream parfait, then you need to head straight to this chapter and check out the recipes for The Salty Grahama, The Krispy Queen, or the Thousandaire's Sundae Brunch. These desserts and this book look too good to pass so make sure you pick up a copy, invite your friends and family over, and cool off with some delicious home made ice cream. Ice cream this good is meant to be shared!
