Pi Day is tomorrow, so to celebrate I thought I would share Teeny's Tour of Pie by Teeny Lamothe, which recently came across my kitchen table. Sadly I don't have a desk to work from these days, remind me to tell you some day of the basement flood of aught nine, during which I questioned my decision to become a first time homeowner.
Just so you know, I still question that decision five years later.
Anyway, early on in reading this book I decided that I really admire Teeny Lamothe because she was determined to make her dreams a reality and wasn't afraid to use an unorthodox method to do so. When she decided that she wanted to become a "lady pie baker" she sent emails out to those she admired and wanted to learn from, then spent an entire year apprenticing across the country to develop her craft.
Boys and girls, that takes a lot of guts, how many of you could put your life on hold for a year in pursuit of a dream?
In flipping through the book I was met with page after page of helpful tips, from rolling, crimping, and baking to what to do "when good crusts go bad" and that was before I even got to the recipes. The recipes are divided into seasons with notes on what is fresh at the farmer's market that time of year. They're accompanied by some completely drool-worthy photography and include a mix of not just sweet, but also savory pies. There are also instructions on how to make teeny pies (see what she did there, clever girl) using 5 inch pie plates, for those times when you don't want to eat pie for breakfast every day for a week. I thought this was especially helpful for the pies that would freeze well since I like to have something on hand to pull out for guests, it makes it seem like I've slaved away all day in the kitchen even on the days when I don't manage to get up and take a shower until well past noon.
Oh wait, that's everyday isn't it... What can I say, I'm more of a night owl than an early riser.
Now if you're curious I'll let you know which pies immediately caught my eye
Strawberry Rhubarb Pie
Earl Grey Cream Pie in a Sugar Cookie Crust
Chai Cream Pie
Reuben Pot Pie with Rye Crumble and Caraway Crust
Thanksgiving Dinner Pie
Unfortunately I don't have permission to share any of the recipes with you, but I will be posting photos of the recipes I tested out on instagram and twitter soon, so make sure to keep an eye out for them. I'll likely be making some of the savory pies from the book, I have a 2 year old that doesn't need the sugar rush that eating pie for breakfast every day would give him. If you want something sweet check back tomorrow for my Pi day recipe, I promise it will be delicious.
