Ingredients: Cane Sugar, Matcha Green Tea, Xanthan Gum, Tapioca Dextrose, and Natural Flavor
Leaf Type: Matcha (flavored)
Where to Purchase: Red Leaf Tea
Suggested Brewing Tips:
Serving Size: 1 scoop or 12g per 8oz serving
Large bags come with a complementary pre-measured latte scoop. I have found that a level scoop is closer to 15g, which is slightly more than you need for an 8oz serving.
Cold Latte: Pour 6oz of milk into the blender, add a few ice cubes, and 1 scoop (12g) of MATCHAccino mix. Blend until smooth.
Hot Latte: Mix 1 scoop (12g) of MATCHAccino mix with warm milk. Please note that very hot can "burn" green tea and make it a bit bitter as well as lower the natural flavor intensity.
My Method: Using a magic bullet or blender, combine 8 ounces of whole milk and slightly less than 1 scoop of MATCHAccino mix (about 12g). Blend until froth forms at the top and serve immediately.
Several months ago Robert from Red Leaf Tea sent me a free sample of Caramel MATCHAccino for review and I was immediately addicted. Recently coffee has been upsetting my stomach and I had been looking for something to replace my weekly latte with; this ended up being the perfect coffee replacement. I placed a fairly large order, which included four custom flavors that would fit the upcoming holiday season, this way I wouldn't miss the seasonal flavored lattes I love.
It was a tough decision deciding between gingerbread and eggnog for December, but eggnog won out because I hoped that it would help me cut down on the amount of real eggnog I drink. What can I say, I am a self proclaimed eggnog addict. I really do have a bit of a problem this time of year, but boy, what a tasty problem to have! All in all I think this was a great strategy because so far I've only bought one container of eggnog and most of it has been used for making eggnog French toast on the weekends. With Christmas only a week away I've done really well at rationing my one carton of nog and not giving in to the desire to have it for breakfast every day.
If you have read my reviews of previous MATCHAccino flavors you may know that I don't always fall in love with them immediately. I loved the caramel flavor from the first sip, but the pumpkin pie I found to be missing a little something. Eggnog is another flavor that I fell in love with immediately, although I wish the eggnog flavor stood out just a little bit more.
I was initially doubtful that this could become an eggnog replacement for me, but yet again I was proven wrong. This has a delightful creamy texture to it, that while not nearly as thick as eggnog, comes pretty close if you use whole milk and a blender to froth it up like a latte. You may have a slightly different texture if you're using skim milk since it has significantly less milk fat. I also think this is best served cold. I don't know about you, but the thought of warm eggnog doesn't appeal to me. I can't even get behind eggnog lattes at the coffee shop, no matter how hard I try. What I can get behind is the sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon they put on top, that ended up being a great addition to my eggnog MATCHAccino.
The only thing I think this is really missing is the alcohol. When I make eggnog from scratch I generally put a good dose of brandy in it, although others prefer rum or bourbon. In my shortsightedness I didn't even think to order a package of alcohol flavored MATCHAccino to experiment with. Next year I fully intend on picking up small packages of both brandy and rum to see what kind of results I end up with. My love of experimentation combined with the extensive custom flavor list offered by Red Leaf just may put me in the poor house.
The next time I order eggnog MATCHAccino I'm going to try the distinctive level of flavoring, just so I get a bit more eggnog flavor. The delicate level that was used in my small size didn't stand out enough for me with this particular flavor, although I find that it is perfect with most of the others I have ordered.
Would I order this again? Yes! I think it makes a nice seasonal treat, but next time I would increase the flavor strength from delicate to distinctive so the eggnog flavor stands out more.
