Ingredients: Cane Sugar, Matcha Green Tea, Xanthan Gum, Tapioca Dextrose, and Natural Flavor
Leaf Type: Matcha (flavored)
Where to Purchase: Red Leaf Tea
Suggested Brewing Tips:
Serving Size: 1 scoop or 12g per 8oz serving
Large bags come with a complementary pre-measured latte scoop. I have found that a level scoop is closer to 15g, which is slightly more than you need for an 8oz serving.
Cold Latte: Pour 6oz of milk into the blender, add a few ice cubes, and 1 scoop (12g) of MATCHAccino mix. Blend until smooth.
Hot Latte: Mix 1 scoop (12g) of MATCHAccino mix with warm milk. Please note that very hot can "burn" green tea and make it a bit bitter as well as lower the natural flavor intensity.
My Method: Using a magic bullet or blender, combine 8 ounces of 2% milk and slightly less than 1 scoop of MATCHAccino mix (about 12g). Blend until froth forms at the top and serve immediately.
Two months ago Robert from Red Leaf Tea sent me a free sample of their Caramel MATCHAccino for review and I was immediately addicted to this easy to make treat. Rather fortuitously (for me anyway,) just shortly following my review there was a crazy good deal on a special grade version that had accidentally been mixed up with a batch of normal grade. That gave me a 50/50 chance of receiving the normal version of their really yummy Caramel MATCHAccino for 85% off. Who could pass that up? I ordered 4 large packages, plus some custom flavors to tie in with the holidays. I probably have enough to last me over a year.
The first package I opened happened to be the special grade, but other than slight differences in taste and color it still made a very yummy and much less expensive treat. I find that the slight bitterness from the special grade matcha doesn't bother me at all, but I'm here to talk about the special grade Caramel MATCHAccino, so let's get on to the review of one of the custom flavors I ordered.
I don't know about you, but I absolutely love pumpkin pie and my Thanksgiving dinner just isn't complete without it. When I saw that Red Leaf offered a custom flavored Pumpkin Pie MATCHAccino I knew I had to order it. What could possibly be better than Pumpkin Pie in a cup?
Unfortunately I didn't immediately fall in love with this flavor like I did with the caramel. I found it to be lacking just a little bit in the taste and texture department. I was really hoping for a little bit more sweetness and a creamy texture similar to pumpkin pie, but it was missing both of those things. Part of this could easily be solved by adding more sugar, but I'm trying to eliminate sugar from my diet and this already has a fair amount in it. Instead I decided to blend my pumpkin pie and caramel MATCHAccino together and the results were fantastic.
I found that a 1:1 ratio of pumpkin pie to caramel is nearly perfect for me. The caramel adds some of the sweetness back in that I was really missing without covering up the spices that make this taste like pumpkin pie. It also adds a wonderful creamy texture to the latte, although it is still missing the pumpkin flavor. Now the only thing that could make this better would be a huge dollop of whipped cream on top.
Would I order this again? Possibly. I think it makes a nice seasonal treat, but I have other flavors I enjoy more.
