The original Pineapple Upside Down Cake, made with a black base, was actually one of the first teas that I ordered from Della Terra. Della Terra was my introduction to the world of dessert teas and I remember being suitably impressed by the fact that it tasted just like cake, or as I described it at the time, warm, creamy, brown sugar filled goodness.
In general, I haven't been a huge fan of many of Della Terra's black blends, I just don't care for the base they use. However, my interest was immediately piqued when I saw it was going to be reblended with a rooibos base as part of the Harvest Collection. I have a number of rooibos based teas from Della Terra in my permanent rotation and am always willing to add another.
I still don't think the pineapple or cherries come across very well, despite the rather large chunks of both present in the dry leaf I scooped out. Instead, it has rather a heavy maple and brown sugar flavor which still reminds me somewhat of cake, but since I don't taste the fruit aspects this falls a little short of the mark for me.
What I do like is that the rooibos cuts through all of the flavoring, somewhat tempering the sticky sweetness of this blend. This is one sweet tea and I highly recommend it for anyone with a sweet tooth. While this won't make it into my permanent rotation of teas, I love that it was released with a rooibos base, I definitely prefer it over the original.
My Rating: 79/100
Would I order this again? Possibly. It didn't wow me, but I'd drink it again.
